On November 6th, 2020 the People’s Republic of China and Italy celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In March 2019 president Xi Jinping officially visited Rome, and during his visit China and Italy signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative. On the evening of November 4th President Xi Jinping talked to the Italian President Mattarella. They pointed out that for the last fifty years both countries have developed their relations on the basis of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit, eventually becoming comprehensive strategic partners.
The global economic and social impact of the pandemic, a highly controversial outcome of the presidential election in the US, China’s Fifth Plenum recommendations for the Five Year Plan and long-term 2035 vision and Italy presidency of the G20: these are all powerful components that might have a profound impact over the future course of Sino-Italian relations.
In view of this, the Institute of Area Studies of Peking University, in partnership with the Center for Mediterranean Area Studies, will organize an online workshop on January 20th, inviting Chinese and Italian scholars to reflect upon this epoch-making moment in Sino-Italian relations, discussing its historic roots and development, together with the political and economic opportunities and challenges lying ahead.
